Добилась от Конгресса установления 8-часового рабочего дня для работников предприятий федерального подчинения, в 1868 - отмены Закона о контрактном труде 1864 [Contract Labor Act of 1864], разрешавшего привлечение иностранных рабочих по контракту, выступала за проведение политических реформ. В 1872 объединяла около 650 тыс. рабочих, переименована в Национальную трудовую реформистскую партию [National Labor Reform Party]. 5 Taft-Hartley Labor Act

(1828-1869) Силвис, УильямДеятель рабочего движения. Работал на сталеплавильных заводах, бродяжничал в поисках работы. В 1857 принял участие в профсоюзном движении в г. Филадельфия, в 1859 был среди учредителей Союза сталеваров-формовщиков [Iron-Moulders' Union], занял пост профсоюзного казначея. Во время Гражданской войны [ Civil War] профсоюз практически прекратил существование, и в 1863 Силвис предпринял попытку его возрождения, создав на основе прежнего профсоюза Межнациональный профсоюз сталеваров [Iron Moulders' International Union (IMIU)]; с 1863 и до конца дней был его председателем, создав к 1867 общенациональную организацию с 8,6 тыс. членов и 149 местными отделениями [ local]. Выступал против монополий, существующей системы распределения зарплаты, за создание сталелитейных кооперативов, большую политическую активность рабочих. Был в числе организаторов т.н.
